Details:

Jan Schier received his M.Sc. degree in technical cybernetics from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague in 1989 and his Ph.D. degree from the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague in 1995. During his Ph.D. studies, he has joined the Institute of Information Theory and Automation, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague.

Between 1995-2002 he has been on several stays with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EWI), TU Delft, the Netherlands and the SISTA group of the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT), KU Leuven, Belgium, in both cases working in the field of applied signal processing.

After his return to Prague, he joined the Department of Signal Processing, where he was involved in implementations of signal processing algorithms in programmable hardware.

An informal cooperation with the Yeast Colony Group of the Department of Genetics and Microbiology at the Faculty of Sciences, Charles University, started by "lucky chance" round 2009, sparkled his growing interest in digital image processing, which eventually led him to join the Image Processing group of UTIA in October 2011.

His conference paper "Automated counting of yeast colonies using the Fast Radial Transform algorithm", jointly authored with Bohumil Kovář, has been awarded the Best paper award at the BIOINFORMATICS 2011 conference.

Research projects

Jan Schier is principal investigator of the TA01010931 project "System for support of the FISH method evaluation", supported by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TAČR).

Organizing & Others

He has been program co-chair of the BIOIMAGING 2014 and BIOIMAGING 2015 conferences and, in the past, program chair of the BIOINFORMATICS 2012 conference, all organized by INSTICC.

He has been a member of multiple program committees in the field of signal and image processing, including IASTED SIP/SIPA and Eusipco (European Signal Processing Conference). On occasion, he reviews papers for the Signal, Image and Video Processing journal, published by Springer.
