Physically-based realistic image synthesis is an important problem in computer graphics that poses significant research challenges. In spite of more than 25 years of continuous research in this area, the
state-of-the-art image synthesis algorithms are still unable to deliver realistic images of satisfactory quality in acceptable computation times. In this talk, I give a high-level introduction to realistic image synthesis and mention the main challenges. I will summarize some of the work on efficient image synthesis algorithms that I contributed to, and I will briefly mention investigations of the usability of such algorithms in practical lighting and material design tasks.
