Abstract:

The project deals with interdisciplinary research of digital image processing methods applied to analysis and conservation of artworks. The aim is development of image processing methods for multimodal data acquired during the analysis of historical artworks exploiting the knowledge of multispectral properties of dyes, used for artwork creation. Part of the project is an experimental study of these characteristics and consequently mathematical modeling of paint optical properties in different wavelengths (transparency, reflectance, absorbance). Such models will be used as an a priori information for newly proposed image processing methods adapted to the gained information and application oriented to the art analysis field, especially image enhancement and registration, image multimodal fusion, change detection and visualization, and segmentation. Experimentally collected characteristics together with the proposed models will be made public through Internet. New methods will be implemented in the form of a library for developers and as a toolbox for art conservators.
