Modelling of perception of non-planar scene in a defect vision

Our goal is to display how people with a defect of vision see a non-planar scene. Convolution with the PSF is used as first approximation. It works for planar scene. For this approach we have to estimate the depth map of the scene. This depth map is calculated from two input images focused on the same distance but with different depth of focus. The depth of scene is computed from differences of blurring these two images. If we want to estimate retinal image of non-planar scene we will apply space-variant convolution based on depth map and the PSF. We use the PSF of the eye measured by the laser ray tracing.

Example of the PSF of the eye (pupil diameter 5mm) and corrensponding contours of the wave aberration (0.5um contour line spacing).

Input images for estimating the scene depth. The image blurred because of narrow depth of field (left) and the image taken with wide depth of field (right) - click on images for the detail of the left part.
